Since the start of 2018, CIAT has been posting opinion pieces or op-eds on Medium. As of this writing, nearly a dozen op-eds are on there.

A few of you have asked me why we’ve decided to use Medium to publish op-eds from our scientists and experts. Here’s why.

Reason # 1. Influencers live on Medium.

Medium is a digital publishing platform designed to, as its About page says, “[tap] into the brains of the world’s most insightful writers, thinkers, and storytellers to bring you the smartest takes on topics that matter.”

Reason # 2. Publishing on Medium is a cost-effective way to broaden our visibility.

Anyone can publish on Medium, and it costs nothing to publish there. All you need to do is sign up with your Gmail or Facebook account.

As per estimates, Medium had 60 million monthly users by the end of 2016. That means our op-eds have the potential to reach a massive audience.

Reason # 3. With Medium, we don’t have to be at the mercy of news outlets to get our op-eds published.

The reality is no matter how good our op-eds and our pitches to news outlets are, there’s no guarantee that these news outlets will publish them. They normally warn you about this on their op-ed submission pages.

But we need to showcase our thought leadership. This establishes our expertise on the different areas of research that we are doing. So publishing on Medium is a solution.

Such branding has made it appealing to influencers. You can see a partial list below of influencers that might be relevant to CIAT:

And so if we want to increase our chances of reaching those influencers, we need to be on Medium.

A final note: If you appreciate any of the op-eds we publish on Medium – housed under CIAT Insights – please tell your friends and peers. Most especially, give them claps; you can give as many as 50.
